Prélude: Austin’s Hottest New Cocktail and Canapé Destination

Austin, Texas, is known for being a cultural hub brimming with an eclectic lifestyle. Most notable is its love of live music and countless annual music festivals. But did you know Austin has become a destination for foodies? You can find everything from hole-in-the-wall taquerias and food trucks serving biscuits and gravy and lobster rolls to upscale, fine-dining establishments that are undoubtedly on the Michelin Guide’s radar.

That’s right, Michelin is finally making its way to the Lonestar State, and former French Laundry executive chef Matt Peter’s newest and hottest cocktail and canape lounge, Prélude, could very well be in the running.

Prélude is not just a lounge- it’s an experience. This new venue in Austin offers unique handcrafted cocktails and elevated small bites, all within a sexy renovated historic home that harks back to the days of prohibition speakeasies.

As we walked up the front lawn of the renovated historic home-turned-lounge, we were greeted by large oak trees wrapped in twinkling white lights and a grand wooden door. The building’s charcoal gray paint with black and brass accents exudes sophisticated glamour.

Prélude partnered with West Chelsea Contemporary, a local art gallery my husband and I love. It is known for its urban contemporary exhibits and fabulous VIP parties. Upon entering, guests are met by a larger-than-life original Simon Berger artwork mounted above a working fireplace.

A Swiss artist, Berger creates incredible pieces by breaking safety glass into a million pieces. The restaurant also features classic Salvador Dali artwork and a Jeff Koons sculpture.

As we went around the corner, the host led us to a high-top table near the fabulous gold-embellished bar with a stunning statement-piece chandelier. The marble tabletops with gold legs and deep green velvet chair cushions were elegant, sleek, and perfectly executed decor.

Upon being seated, our server approached with a huge smile and just the right amount of information to get us started. She shared her favorite cocktails and gave us time to peruse the menu.

I chose the Plum Sour, a decadent twist on the whiskey sour featuring plum and cherry flavors. We watched the bartenders craft this luscious cocktail with smoky, rich bourbon topped with frothy egg whites. It was so delicious I could’ve easily had three more.

My husband ordered Stolpman’s Sauvignon Blanc, one of his favorites. The server mistakenly brought champagne when he ordered a second glass, a Wollfer Estate Rosé. Though we didn’t catch the name, it was excellent. I liked it so much that I asked for my own glass after finishing my cocktail.

If you’re seeking a full sit-down dinner, Prélude isn’t the spot for you. This venue in Austin serves as an introduction to your night out or the perfect nightcap. Enjoying one last cocktail and a delicious Cookie Rich dessert would be an excellent way to end your evening.

Let’s talk food! The shrimp toast was a little dreamboat of a bite. The chefs topped perfectly toasted, thick, buttery bread with a spicy shrimp blend, refreshing cucumbers, and microgreens.

Their take on classic children’s chicken nuggets is fun, but is it worth $16.00 for four pieces? The short answer is no. They were yummy nuggets accompanied by slices of pickled green tomatoes, yet there were no serving utensils, so you had to pick up a wet piece of food with your fingers. Their creamy creme fresh was delicious, and my husband appreciated the miniature bottle of Tabasco provided.

For $26.00, you can enjoy six bite-size sweet pea croquettes topped with Iberico ham, Meyer lemon, and mint labneh. They were delectable, and the ham melted in your mouth, but I didn’t leave the table craving more.

Overall, Prélude is a much-needed venue in Austin that adds a touch of glam meets old-world charm. The music pumping through the speakers was lively without being obnoxiously loud.

As I mentioned before, the artwork adorning the walls is remarkable. I loved seeing the famous graffiti artist Risk Rock’s Rolling Stones’s neon light artwork and local artist Ash Almonte throughout the space.

Austin still has a long way to go before rivaling other metropolises in the restaurant/bar/lounge scene, but Prélude is giving it a run for its money.
